New Work…

Just hot off the press!  I’m finished with my little blue quilt!  I’ve listed it in my shop if you are curious!In the meantime, I’m working on a quilt made entirely of lines.  I simply love how delicate they look and the character of those hand-cut lines.  Cheers!

Robin these are lovely – your work is really inspiring me at present and I’m getting to grips with some current WIPs so I’ll be free to get going with some projects on similar lines to what you do

::A Simple Pause::

{It was a moment captured days ago, yet lingers with me today.  In that instant when day officially passed,  I could imagine our planet pausing just briefly as every concern melted away.  All that mattered was right here, and  right now.}

Starry Night and Day Quilt: Finished!

It’s finished!  My “Starry Night and Day” quilt!  This one turned out so nice… I’m very pleased with it! I took a couple of pictures of it and can’t decide which one I like better… the indoor shot: Or the outdoor shot: I’ve listed it in my Etsy shop.    Also, if you are interested...

I like the indoor shot better. LOVE the quilt! :)

Debbie-Esch House QuiltsSeptember 17, 2010 - 1:25 am

These are both terrific photos! I love how the quilt blends so harmoniously with the blues in the bedroom, but also how it shines by itself in the outdoor picture.

I love how you did the “mountain”!

The quilting is just perfect. I’m loving this quilt big time!!

Starry Night and Day: Sewing on a Binding

I made this little video to show how I attach a binding to a quilt.  I don’t usually sew this fast… I sped it up to fit the music.  Enjoy! Sewing a Binding on a Quilt from Robin Ferrier on Vimeo.

Hi Guys, to answer a few questions:
That little piece of blue fabric is simply a piece of folded fabric I use to hold my threads in place. I always use them when piecing and sewing on bindings, and I use the same one over and over until it gets so thick I can’t tolerate it. I found this eliminates the problem of threads jumping when you take the first stitch, and it also conserves thread because I no longer have long tails to clip.

As for a more detailed tutorial, I’m sure if you hunt around online or visit you tube you will be able to find something with a little more detail. This video I made is simply to inspire others to work cheerfully and with enthusiasm. I’ve bound hundreds of quilts, so I can pretty much do this in my sleep! I am so busy in the studio that I cannot take too much time out to write tutorials or make tutorial videos… plus, that isn’t the type of thing I’m good at. There are others out there who are far more talented at teaching than I am :)

Thank you for commenting! I love hearing from you!

I love how you connect the ends. Way easier than the measuring and manuvering I usually do. Thanks

Karen MSeptember 16, 2010 - 11:39 am

I’ve never seen the ends joined so quickly and neatly. Can we get a close-up of that? Or is there someplace where an explanation can be read? This is a task I dread, and I’m fascinated by how you do it.

Wow! So interesting, I will never pin again!! What is the little blue square for when you pull the quilt away to finish the binding?
Thanks,

Starry Night and Day: The Quilting and a Question

A reader asks “What book would I suggest for a person new to the world of quilting?”  All I can think is YIKES!!  To me, quilt making is basically sewing straight lines… something I’m good at and it explains why I don’t do many garments.  I also went through my “book” phase years ago and...

I bought Fons and Porter’s Complete Guide to Quilting many many years ago and I think it covers just about everything. I’ve always liked it, especially since it starts you out with very simple information and techniques and builds with each project. It does look dated now though and I don’t think it would appeal to the under 30 “modern quilt guild” crowd. For that I too like “The Modern Quilt Workshop” though I don’t think it has the nice learning curve that Fons and Porter’s book has. I imagine teh best thing to do is to just browse teh quilt section of the book store and see what speaks to you — for some it will be reference material, for others it will be specific projects….

Here is a link to my favorite things, including two books: http://quiltingspirit.blogspot.com/2007/04/favorite-things.html

I also like “Borders, Bindings and Edges” by Sally Collins.

Okay dear readers, let me first say I have no idea why some of these comments have little percentage signs where the spaces should be… Ethne’s is not the first one. Read between the signs and you will get her message.

And OF COURSE, Patsy Thompson’s DVD’s are perfect for learning how to machine quilt! She sent me one and I think it’s fabulous! DVD’s are a great way to learn especially if words on a page don’t grab you. Patsy has been a follower for years and a faithful customer. I’m thrilled to hear that her business is growing and that she is moving into a large warehouse! She’s certainly one to watch!

Patsy Thompson’s DVD’s http://www.patsythompsondesigns.com/ are the perfect choice to learn machine quilting…..it’s like having a private hands on workshop with an excellent and patient instructor.

My first quilting book was “Start Quilting” with Alex Anderson. It was a great starting place. I also really LOVE “The Modern Quilt Workshop” by Weeks Ringle and Bill Kerr. They have a new book coming out in the fall (Oct, I think).

New quilter, just jump in and have fun!
