A Simple Pleasure

I’m taking a little break from my latest work to whip up a simple nap quilt for a school fundraiser.  I have a stack of 9″ blocks made from scraps and assembled in no particular pattern.  I make them to pass time or in those transition points between projects.  Each block is different, all are...

The quilt is gorgeous! Every time I see a photo of your little puppy, I actually say “AwwwwWWWwwWwww!!!” out loud! What a cutie pie! :)

Very colourful, indeed! Your pieces are also regularly featured on Flickr in the Doll Quilt Swap inspiration mosaics. I have used a couple of your quilts in inspiration mosaics, myself. Love your work.

{Noticing}

…I think that’s the theme of the day… pulling together unrelated pieces and trying to make connections…

maybe a kind of creative coalescence……

African Textiles

In starting new work I often have something in mind before I charge ahead.  With my latest piece, I have no idea of what I want the end result to look like, instead I know what types of fabric I want to use and what types of stitching I want to incorporate.  I think it...

Robin, The African textiles really speak to me too. I have always loved them and they are a fine place to go for inspiration. Is the book truly as wonderful as it looks?

KUBA RAFIA!! That’s the fiber. They sometimes put tufting in it. Not very velvety velvet effect.

Hi Robin,
I numbered the images, as I know something about some of them.
#3 is tie dyed, but you can probably tell that
#4 stitch resist, I think, even the fuzzy triangular square….
#5 is hardly ‘fabric’ at all, except that it is woven of some quite brittle fine fiber. It doesn’t have a sweet hand. I’ve seen quite a lot of this stuff and the figures on it are appliqued on, without turn under, I think. I love it too. The work is done on 1 foot square pieces and then sewn together sometimes by machine with other similar squares.
#7 & 8 are from that same culture & idiom. The fine black lines are stitching.
#9 looks like 3 woven strips treated with stitch resist. This resist I think is made by sewing over & over along a line to make caterpillar tubes that resist. I’m not sure though because the lines of white don’t show thread marks.

Oh Robin, I don’t know if I’ve ever written or not but, I simply love your work! I too am inspired by these images! Can’t wait to see what you create!

{Lettering}

I have a box of old leather stamps that I purchased off of ebay a few years ago.  It’s an incomplete set, and a little dusty, but still, it’s quite fabulous in it’s weathered condition.  I have in mind to insert letters into my slow cloth… letters not words.  I want the font to be...

Incredible. I love it.

That is really effective! Great idea.

OH YUM! I LOVE FONTS!! At one point in my life I had an outrageous number of alphabets.

I love the old ones particularly.

Being the big fan of text that I am, I really like these. The punches themselves are beautiful, and your use on the cloth is nicely ethereal.

I got your package today — thank you very much!

I like it!! Cool idea and I get it.

{Slow Cloth}

I’ve decided to rename my “Prayer Shawl” and am calling it my “Slow Cloth.”  It’s simple, I know, but the new name suits the piece better.  This is a work of gradual consideration… an unhurried piece where I can think and play deeply at each step.  I don’t expect to get anywhere fast with it...
