It was a busy weekend for me… I attended the Art Maui opening at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center where my piece “Elements #28” hung. I’m finally able to show this one to you!
I finished it last year and I remember liking the way I was able to incorporate solid hand-dyeds with clamp-dyed and immersion-dyed fabrics. If you look closely, you will also see a few commercial fabrics. This one hangs very nicely because I’ve sewn a sleeve on the bottom which holds another dowel in place. I like how this one hangs.
I saw my friend George there who is the guy that built our deck. George does collages with found objects. I really like this one because of the precision he cut the violin, and because of the assortment of materials he’s included inside. It’s a little like I-spy. My kids noticed the dollar right away! George’s piece will be the art that they will use in publications for next year’s Art Maui. Way to go George!
The show was colorful, eclectic and contemporary. There were a lot of mixed media pieces. I noticed a lot of pure warm colors… maybe it was the lighting but there seemed to be an amber glow to the space.
I also attended the Gala event for our school and thought I’d show you my two quilts hanging at the silent auction. I have no idea who won these… I was a little distracted by that martini… ahem. I do hope the new owners are happy with them. I was thinking to myself today that some child will now have a piece of his/her classmates in 2011. The will look on these quilts in years to come and be able to see these paintings and read these poems with different eyes. These two classes are really great groups of kids! It’s a wonderful thing to have something like this to remember your friends by!
