Our Days by the Shore… part 1

It’s going to take me a couple of days to get through this… it was such a wonderful trip… you don’t mind do you? Where were we?  On the southern coast of the Big Island is an oasis tucked away in a field of lava.  It’s enchanting really, a long drive over crumbled lava ended...

Ann Johnston

I was browsing through the Stanford Magazine and look what I found, an article about Ann Johnston!  Her book “Color By Accident” was my first dye book… years ago… ahem… and it has survived countless book purges that have taken place over the years.  I’d recommend it to anybody starting down the dyeing path.  Enjoy!

Benji: part one

My daughter has been asking me for a while now if she could bring home a caterpillar.  Inside I feel the slight tug of competing agendas; on the one hand of course I’d like to embrace her fascination with nature and allow her to bring one home so that she can watch for herself it’s...

What a cool idea! I never did that as a child nor had any friends that did it either. I think this would be a great activity for every child to get involved in to become more connected with nature. I’ve often thought it would be a minor miracle to be able to observe the transformation of the caterpillar in the cocoon into a butterfly. There is a Butterly House in St. Louis, MO, where I used to live, and I did get to observe, in the “nursery” newly emerged butterflies. I think their wings needed to dry before they could fly. Really interesting!

I have a friend who lives in Japan. Her kids actually have horned beetles as pets. I hope Shelby enjoys Benji through the summer!
