New Work! #39

Elements #39 “Sheltered Sun” 25″ x 38″ Alright, it’s finally finished!  This week is a busy one, but I did eek out some time today to finish the binding, attach the sleeve, prepare the dowel and sign my name.  I snapped a picture of today’s adventure… a field-trip with my son’s class… to show you...

Oh this is so beautiful! The colors are so delicious and I love the extreme quilting. Must try it.
I understand your dilemma about investing time in giving something away and it not receiving what it’s worth. I think your work is brilliant.

NatalyaFebruary 15, 2012 - 3:08 pm

it’s wonderful!!

Minna LevenkronFebruary 15, 2012 - 12:29 pm

Robin,
I am amazed at how you can reinvent yourself and move on from where you’ve been and keep on growing and changing and each change is so exquisite. How nice it must be to have that kind of creativity and motivation in oneself. I feel lucky just to be able to observe it.

MicheleFebruary 14, 2012 - 4:30 am

Gorgeous! It sparkles!

I hope you are pleasantly surprised by what this one brings. I think it is cheerful yet sophisticated and will appeal to a wide range of people. Don’t sell yourself short!

Candy from Candied FabricsFebruary 13, 2012 - 5:50 pm

Robin this is GLORIOUS!!!!!!!!! I LOVE the texture you get with the lines, and the colors work so well together!

New Work!

Elements #36 (stickwork #4) 21″ x 30″   or    30″ x 21″ At different times when I look at this I can’t decide which orientation I like better.  I have a hunch which way it will ultimately hang, but I’ll let my “peeps” at flickr help me decide.  I’m loving this one (and the...

my gut first said the horizontal…but then I really like the vertical too with that rule-breaking dark side….

Debbie-Esch House QuiltsSeptember 8, 2011 - 2:05 am

I think I like it horizontal – the “weight” of the browns and reds at the bottom feels natural.

New Work! Elements #35 – Restructuring

For those of you wanting only a peek, I present to you my latest creation: Elements #35 – Restructuring 22″ x 18″ The theme of restructuring stuck with this one until the bitter end.  While sewing on the binding, I realized I had made a mistake… that teal strip in the lower left hand corner...

I love the colors on this one! I had to really scroll back and forth to see what had you so dissatisfied with the before, but now, I think I understand!

I know that having the dayjob helps me appreciate the time I get to spend in the studio. Although I could be more efficient with the time I have in there, I know that my time limitations really help get me moving.

ShelleySeptember 2, 2011 - 3:34 am

Your quilt is spectacular! I saw it on flickr, and had to jump over here to read more about it. But what really resonates with me is your comment that you feel as if your job of mothering has been outsourced. That is the exact way to describe how I’ve been feeling the past two weeks since my kids have gone back to school. I feel like I should do SOMETHING, but what? Maybe not immediately, but certainly I should have a plan in place for when they are both in college, shouldn’t I? I just keep on pondering and believing that the right answer will present itself. Good luck to you in this next new chapter of your life :)

It seems to me that life is all about restructuring — small changes sometimes, big changes at other times. Your changes sound like good ones for this time in your life. They may need a little tweaking, but they’ll turn out to be perfect in the long run — just like your quilt!

ElizabethAugust 31, 2011 - 3:46 pm

That is one lovely quilt. And congrats on having the guts to make that final edit. I’m not sure I would have been as attentive or dedicated to making it right.

I love your comment “fears come and go, but those are only thoughts, nothing real.” Too true and yet those thoughts can sap a lot of time and energy if we let them.

Good luck on your restructuring!

I did the same thing this past february. I spent a year and a half before that as a full time artist (took a break from work) and I won’t lie, the re-entry back into the work force took some getting used to. But it was worth it and while I don’t have as much time as I’d like to make art, I find its even more precious now and is reflected in my work.

So it all has a purpose. Which makes it all good. :)

Finished!  I’m really loving the direction that my work is going in.  Slowly I’m making progress in my desire to add something new to the world of solid-colored quilts.  Persistence pays off and I’m finding my voice… gosh, that sounds so Oprah.  This quilt was intended to be a submission to a local art show...

This is alive with movement. Very successful.

This is alive with movement. Think about where the eye travels when viewing this. I believe this is very successful.

Robin, this is beautiful. I like the fact that I cannot see a grid or pattern. It makes me keep looking at it to figure out the construction. To me, that makes a great quilt! One that constantly asks me to take another look.

karenAugust 23, 2011 - 4:46 am

another stunning piece of modern fabric art!! you are, as always, an inspiration!!

NogaAugust 23, 2011 - 1:48 am

This is an amazing work of art. Just perfect. Thanks for sharing it with us.

KristinAugust 23, 2011 - 1:42 am

I love this quilt! I really like all the diagonal lines and the colors are great. I’m curious – do you draw your design first or just start constructing units and piecing free form? Thanks.

colleen koleAugust 23, 2011 - 1:37 am

This piece is really beautiful Robin. It is hard to try a new color but- as usual-you did it.

I ,too, have appreciated Superior Threads and found them to be very helpful if I wanted something different. I will have to try So Fine as my top thread next time.

MarianneAugust 22, 2011 - 5:51 pm

I really love this piece…and the quilting as well. I too find it hard to limit my colour palet…..you did it so well.

robinAugust 22, 2011 - 5:25 pm

Always good to hear from you Daphne! There is a reason why the quilting does not follow the pattern… Can you imagine how much time that would take! Yikes! If I were entering it in a big show, or perhaps if this was a very special piece, I would have put the extra effort into it. That said, your point is well taken. Quilting that competes or detracts from the overall composition is not good. I was thinking I did alright here, but I could imagine of a way to satisfy both the need for a tailored quilting motif and the need for quilting within reason. On another note, I’m not sure those typos in your comment were intended. Sometimes that happens with comments of mine… not sure why.

Daphne HarwoodAugust 22, 2011 - 5:15 pm

Tit for tat here, Robin.

I will take on your task-mistress role here!!!

When you have really complex patchwork I am wishing that the quilting pattern went with the patchwork. The horizontal/vertical grids are effective as holder-downers, but I yearn for qilting that goes with & enhances the patchwork.

I do like this latesy quilt. Depth has happened, for sure & interest.

PaulaKAugust 22, 2011 - 3:31 pm

Very nice! I love the depth – it keeps drawing me back to look even further into it! Looking forward to your next piece!

RosaMariaAugust 22, 2011 - 3:14 pm

wow!! I’m totally in love with it!! the lines are amazing and the color mix is perfect!

kristaAugust 22, 2011 - 2:32 pm

Absolutely gorgeous Robin! It looks so crisp and fresh.

New Work: “My Monk has Warm Hands”

I know it’s been a while since I’ve posted here… all is well with us, we seemed to have settled into a string of unstructured yet full days.  The kids are happily enjoying new activities and I’ve been busy as driver and as “the one who reads on the beach.”  It’s all good. Perhaps the...

OMG, I LOVE your quilt!! Can’t wait to explore your blog. :) Thanks for sharing and for inspiring me!

karenJune 28, 2011 - 11:27 am

This might be my favorite piece of yours yet. It’s incredibly stunning!!! It seems a good thing that you were able to put it away for a while to come back when you felt inspiration for it once again. That knowing definitely paid off.
Good for you for keeping the yoga constant in your life…..
