New Work!

Quiltlet #21 17 3/4″ x 17 3/4″ It’s always fun finishing something… even if it is something small and similar to something you’ve done in the past.  It makes me think that the month of April is not all lost!  I’m hoping you too are having fun at whatever you are doing!  Cheers!

Stunning! I love all the quilting lines!

Love this cute little guy! Lots of fun color with bits of surprise and great geometric asymmetry.

Your quiltlet is vibrant and compelling! Cheers to Spring!

Perfectly not perfect

I’ve been thinking about how things don’t always turn out perfectly.  Take this quilt for example… I mean, just look at it… there is nothing “perfect” about this quilt. The shapes are irregular, I ran out of one color and had to add others, those borders are unusual, the quilting a little wild… but in...

Love the quilt and the post.

An imperfect quilt for an imperfect situation = perfect acceptance and and a wonderful start in the world for the baby. The quilt is adorable and the shower sounds like fun.

Thank you for sharing your story, wonderfully said, and quilt as well…

MicheleJanuary 16, 2012 - 5:09 am

It’s a beautiful piece of art! So creative and fun.

Amen! Well said. Beautiful quilt!

New Work! – a simple quilt

Started as a demo for a magazine article, I finally got around to finishing this one.  Seems that my break from quilting was just that… a break. I’m expanding my exploration into “grout quilting” in which I take thin strips of fabric and use it as grout between tiles of different colored fabrics.  I’m finding...

Robin,

Great use of color in this quilt! And thanks for the thought about “owning” your art. It’s getting easier to say “I am an artist” but some days are better than others. Food for thought.

Candy from Candied FabricsOctober 20, 2011 - 10:57 am

Lovely! Way to get back in the saddle! :-) I love how the “muddy” colors work so well with some really “sweet” pastels – it takes a practiced eye to make that work – BRAVO! And yay for getting that name out there on the front!

PattyOctober 20, 2011 - 9:40 am

We all need to own where we are on our quilt journey. Thanks for pointing that out.

Daphne HarwoodOctober 20, 2011 - 7:39 am

YUMMY!!!!

As for owning your art….

I find that when I am knocked off track by another person’s work I am forgetting that the reason I am drawn to it in the first place because that person has been successful in being true to him/herself.

AND rather than knock myself off course to try to be like that person I am admiring, I should be more courageous about being very attentive to being totally myself.

I had never thought of grouting idea with patches, but have done some mosaics!! Thanks for that thought!

Vivien ZepfOctober 19, 2011 - 4:47 pm

You must ABSOLUTELY “own” your beautiful art.

Gail BaarOctober 19, 2011 - 12:24 pm

Robin, I have always liked this type of quilt that you make, the shapes show off the colors so well!

Krista - PoppyprintOctober 19, 2011 - 12:11 pm

I would respectfully disagree and say this is anything but a simple quilt! Your use of colour and balance is remarkable, Robin. It’s not an easy achievement (at least for me!). Like all of your work, I love this little quilt and I look forward to seeing what comes next in your ‘grout’ quilt series.

TerriOctober 19, 2011 - 10:08 am

Beautiful quilt and the colors are so calm and soothing. Your comments about “owning” your art were very interesting. Now you’ve got me thinking. Great subject for further discussion.

AnaOctober 19, 2011 - 10:07 am

Hi Robin,

This is a lovely new quilt. Maybe it is not in your top 10, but I love the lines that support/ define the structure. Food for thought.
The idea of signing the quilt on the front is a great one and you are right, it makes you own it.

My Egg-Lemon

Alright, now some of you have heard me talk about how I want to learn how to paint.  I think I said that at the beginning of the year. Maybe?  Ahem, well time flies doesn’t it!  With the kids back in school and things returning to our school-year routine, I figured it’s a good time...

I think both are great. And you are well along the way; the colors blending is spot-on and it has dimension. I really don’t think it looks like an egg. And, to make you feel better I’ll share a little tidbit about my first foray into art class: the first person I drew in my life drawing class — as an adult, mind you — looked like a turtle. And that’s not an evaluation from me, either; the teacher said it, so you know it’s true…..

JeannieSeptember 22, 2011 - 11:23 am

You are very brave!!! Your lemon turned out beautiful! I didn’t know that painting came from the wrist not the fingers. I have tried watercolors and love the parts like design, color mixing, but the brush intimidates me. That whole hand-eye coordination thing. Keep up the wonderful work!!!

Jennifer SmithSeptember 22, 2011 - 2:06 am

Hi Robin,

I think your first painting is great! Feel free to join us any time if you ever need some subject matter to paint. (rookie painter.blogspot.com) I’m also a quilter and a painter and I go back and forth between the two. I also knit, crochet and garden. In fact, I can’t believe my husband hasn’t left me yet. I think he believes as long as I’m okay with him golfing once or twice a week, we’re even. I’m cool with that.

oh I love working in oils! haven’t done it in years… enjoy enjoy enjoy!

New Work! Elements #35 – Restructuring

For those of you wanting only a peek, I present to you my latest creation: Elements #35 – Restructuring 22″ x 18″ The theme of restructuring stuck with this one until the bitter end.  While sewing on the binding, I realized I had made a mistake… that teal strip in the lower left hand corner...

I love the colors on this one! I had to really scroll back and forth to see what had you so dissatisfied with the before, but now, I think I understand!

I know that having the dayjob helps me appreciate the time I get to spend in the studio. Although I could be more efficient with the time I have in there, I know that my time limitations really help get me moving.

ShelleySeptember 2, 2011 - 3:34 am

Your quilt is spectacular! I saw it on flickr, and had to jump over here to read more about it. But what really resonates with me is your comment that you feel as if your job of mothering has been outsourced. That is the exact way to describe how I’ve been feeling the past two weeks since my kids have gone back to school. I feel like I should do SOMETHING, but what? Maybe not immediately, but certainly I should have a plan in place for when they are both in college, shouldn’t I? I just keep on pondering and believing that the right answer will present itself. Good luck to you in this next new chapter of your life :)

Kristin LAugust 31, 2011 - 7:39 pm

It seems to me that life is all about restructuring — small changes sometimes, big changes at other times. Your changes sound like good ones for this time in your life. They may need a little tweaking, but they’ll turn out to be perfect in the long run — just like your quilt!

ElizabethAugust 31, 2011 - 3:46 pm

That is one lovely quilt. And congrats on having the guts to make that final edit. I’m not sure I would have been as attentive or dedicated to making it right.

I love your comment “fears come and go, but those are only thoughts, nothing real.” Too true and yet those thoughts can sap a lot of time and energy if we let them.

Good luck on your restructuring!

I did the same thing this past february. I spent a year and a half before that as a full time artist (took a break from work) and I won’t lie, the re-entry back into the work force took some getting used to. But it was worth it and while I don’t have as much time as I’d like to make art, I find its even more precious now and is reflected in my work.

So it all has a purpose. Which makes it all good. :)
